Including potassium rich foods in your diet every day is very important to your overall health and well being. This is because this mineral plays a pivotal role in a number of your body’s system functions. Potassium aids in converting glucose to glycogen, which is necessary for your body to be able to use glucose to stimulate muscle energy. It also regulates your heart functions, reduces your blood pressure, and helps your lungs eliminate carbon dioxide. Potassium is key in maintaining normal muscle and nerve function and a healthy acid/alkali balance.

Foods to Include in Your Diet
Potassium rich foods are easy to find, relatively inexpensive, and are probably already a part of your regular diet. The mineral is found primarily in fruits and vegetables, so you need only visit the farm market or grocery store to stock up. Choose papayas, cantaloupe, bananas, raisins, and prunes for your fruit choices; vegetable sources include potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, avocadoes, and asparagus. These are only a sample of the foods that contain high levels of potassium. For a more complete list, visit a reputable health related website or spend some time at your local library.

When You Don’t Get Enough
A deficiency in potassium will cause muscle weakness and exhaustion due to the subsequent imbalance on electrolytes. If the condition is not corrected, and you are continually deprived of potassium rich foods, you will ultimately experience, heart arrhythmias, water retention and continual thirst, nerve and muscle dysfunction, confusion, and high blood pressure. Vomiting, also a symptom of a deficiency, will further deplete your body of potassium.

Breaking Down the Numbers
People need an increasing amount of potassium as they grow older. From birth to 3 years old, it is recommended that children consume 750 to 800 milligrams of potassium every day. Children from 4 to 10 years of age need between 1,100 and 2,000 milligrams. From 11 years old through adulthood, the recommended daily allowance of potassium is from 3,100 to 3,500 milligrams. If you are including a variety of potassium rich foods in your diet each day, you will reach these numbers easily. One-third of a cup of raisins contains 363 milligrams of potassium, and one baked sweet potato, with the skin, has 508 milligrams. A supplement might be necessary if you are not meeting these numbers regularly.

Other Factors
The recommended amounts of daily potassium intake may increase if any of these mitigating factors apply to you. Those who exercise heavily and sweat often will need to increase their consumption of potassium rich foods. Additionally, diuretic medications and some antibiotics, vomiting and diarrhea, and excessive intake of caffeine may also deplete potassium supplies in the body.

Potassium rich foods are a necessary part of your diet for several reasons. This all important mineral aids the body in healthy functioning across several systems. Potassium aids the lungs in expelling carbon dioxide, maintains an acid/alkali balance in the body, reduces blood pressure, and regulates heart functions. It aids in converting glucose to muscle energy and helps the body maintain normal nerve and muscle function. For all of these reasons, it is extremely important that you are getting enough potassium every day.

Foods to Seek Out
The primary sources of potassium are fruits and vegetables. You need not go to a specialty store to find foods rich in potassium; they are in ample supply at your local grocery store or farm market. Vegetables that are high in potassium include potatoes, avocadoes, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and asparagus. Fruits that are high in this vital mineral include bananas, cantaloupe, papayas, raisins, and prunes. These are not the only sources; for a more complete list of those foods that are high or moderately high in potassium, run an internet search or visit your local library.

Signs of Potassium Deficiency
A lack of potassium in the body will initially cause tiredness and muscle weakness, due to an electrolyte imbalance. If not corrected, the symptoms will worsen and you may experience high blood sugar, continual thirst, water retention arrhythmias of the heart, muscle and nerve dysfunction, and confusion. Another symptom is vomiting, which serves to purge the body of even more potassium. These symptoms can be severe, and for most people can be avoided by eating a healthy amount of potassium rich foods every day.

What Should Be Your Daily Consumption?
As you grow older, your daily consumption of potassium should increase. Children from ages 0 to 3 need about 750 to 800 milligrams of potassium every day, while children ranging from 4 to 10 years old should consume 1,100 to 2,000 milligrams. From 11 years old through adulthood, the recommended daily allowance of potassium is from 3,100 to 3,500 milligrams every day. These numbers are easy to reach if you include a variety of potassium rich foods in your diet every day. For example, one cup of cubed cantaloupe contains 494 milligrams of potassium, and a medium avocado contains 450. If you are not getting enough potassium in your diet, you should consider adding a supplement.

Other Considerations
These recommendations are merely guidelines. There are a number of factors which can lead to a decrease in potassium levels in the body, and those who experience any of these regularly should make it a point to increase their consumption of potassium rich foods. These factors include excessive consumption of coffee, tea, or other caffeinated beverages, vomiting and diarrhea, diuretic medications or antibiotics, and heavy exercise that involves sweating.

You have heard that it is important to include potassium rich foods in your diet, but you may not know why. Potassium serves multiple very important roles in your body’s health and well being, including regulating heart functions, reducing blood pressure, and converting glucose into glycogen. This last task is important in the process of using glucose for muscle energy. Additionally, potassium is important for carbon dioxide elimination from the lungs, normal nerve and muscle function, and maintaining an acid/alkali balance. This mineral is necessary for proper functioning across several body systems.

What to Eat
The good news is that foods rich in potassium are plentiful, easy to find, and good to eat. Some fruits with high levels of potassium include papayas, prunes, cantaloupe, bananas, and raisins. Excellent vegetable sources include sweet potatoes, avocadoes, potatoes, asparagus, and pumpkin. There are more foods that have high or moderately high levels of this all important mineral. Consult the library or the internet for a more exhaustive list.

Symptoms of Potassium Deficiency
A diet that does not include enough potassium rich foods or dietary supplements will soon lead to health complications. Symptoms of a deficiency of potassium in the body include water retention, heart arrhythmias, continual thirst, high blood pressure, nerve and muscle dysfunction, confusion, and vomiting. The vomiting will lead to a further deficiency in the mineral. These symptoms, affecting numerous body functions are caused by the electrolyte imbalance brought on by potassium deficiency.

How Much Potassium do you Need?
The recommended daily allowance for potassium changes as you age. Infants and toddlers, ages 0 to 3, should be consuming 750 to 800 milligrams per day, and children from 4 to 10 years old should ingest 1,100 to 2,000 milligrams of potassium per day. From 11 years old through adulthood, the suggested amount is 3,100 to 3,500 milligrams of potassium every day. One banana contains 440 milligrams, and a medium baked potato contains 450. Take a look at your diet, and if you are not reaching these numbers regularly, you should adjust your diet or add a dietary supplement.

Mitigating Factors
The above numbers are a baseline guide. Factors that will lead to depletion of potassium include heavy exercise that leads to sweating, excessive intake of caffeinated beverages, diarrhea, vomiting, and diuretic medications. Some antibiotics may also reduce the potassium levels in your body. If you any of these factors pertain to you, be sure to increase your consumption of potassium rich foods accordingly.

When maintaining a healthy diet, it is crucial to include plenty of potassium rich foods.
